The Seven Deadly Sins of Backup and Recovery

As the amount of data that needs to be managed continues to spiral out of control, backing up all that data in a timely manner becomes a major challenge.

Looking to address that issue, Sepaton recently began shipping a 2100-ES3 series 2925 backup appliance that is capable of ingesting 80TB of data an hour, which the company claims is at least twice as fast an any rival platform.

Florin Dejeu, director of product management for Sepaton, says this performance level is achieved using new compression software and upgrade cards to compress data faster than ever, while at the same time making sure that data is encrypted at rest.

As more organizations find themselves struggling to manage petabytes of data, finding a way to back up that data within an acceptable period of time has become a significant problem. In addition, compliance regulations are making it a requirement to make sure all that data is encrypted, which only adds more overhead from a performance perspective.

Across the board, providers of backup appliances have been steadily improving the performance of their systems to keep pace with ever-increasing amounts of data that not only need to be stored, but actually transferred in a manner that does not take longer than a few hours at most. Unfortunately, most of the existing backup systems they have in place are rapidly becoming obsolete in the face of such requirements.
