Building Software-Defined Control for Your Data Center

Leveraging a long history of storage expertise, FalconStor Software today unveiled a software-defined storage offering that spans multiple storage platforms.

FalconStor Software CEO Gary Quinn says FreeStor is not only designed to work across multiple types of Flash memory and magnetic disk storage systems, it can be deployed both on premise and in the cloud.

In addition, Quinn says that FalconStor is publishing a REST application programming interface (API) to make it simpler to integrate FreeStor with third-party IT management tools and other software-defined data center (SDDC) platforms.

Quinn says that after years of financial woes and other scandals that had nothing to do with the company’s technology, FalconStor has been reorganized to focus more on enterprise IT storage issues rather than the small-to-medium business (SMB) market that FalconStor traditionally served.

At the core of FreeStor is an Intelligent Abstraction core based on a scalable storage hypervisor coupled with a data services engine and facilities for automating the provisioning and management of storage resources. Regardless of type, connectivity, brand or speed, Quinn says FreeStor aggregates all those physical storage systems into a common virtual pool of storage.

The days when storage vendors tied their software to a particular piece of hardware are rapidly coming to a close. We’re now seeing a raft of software-defined storage environments where the data and control planes are separated in a way that fosters simplified management of heterogeneous storage systems. It’s also becoming apparent that when it comes to making the move to software-defined storage, IT organizations will have no shortage of options.
