Ten Recommendations for Simplified, Intelligence-Based Storage Management
The amount of data that most organizations generate is increasing at a significant rate with each passing day. The biggest challenge IT organizations might actually face may not be storing all that data as much as it is making sure application performance doesn’t degrade due to I/O bottlenecks. Because of this, many IT organizations in the era of Big Data are starting to rethink storage architectures.
Of course, figuring out what storage system best suits their IT environment has historically involved a lot of guesswork on the part of IT. Looking to eliminate that, Load DynamiX today unveiled a software-only version of its tools for validating storage performance.
Previously, Load DynamiX required its own dedicated server to be installed to test storage products. Now Len Rosenthal, vice president of marketing for Load DynamiX, says IT organizations can install LDX-V storage testing software on any x86 server.
By making it simpler to more accurately test actual storage performance, Rosenthal says, IT organizations are more likely to find and acquire the storage products that are best tuned to their environment. Each storage vendor has optimized their algorithms and compression for specific types of data scenarios. Rosenthal says the only way to make sure a particular storage platform actually meets the needs of an IT organization is to test it in a real-world application scenario.
As the percent of the budget being consumed by storage continues to increase, IT should also increase its attention on efficient usages of data. For most organizations, that not only means reducing the cost of storing data, but also making sure that application performance doesn’t suffer because of I/O latency issues that are notoriously hard to address after a storage system has been deployed in a production environment.
