Leonovus Rises to Hybrid Object Storage Challenge

9 Critical Questions to Ask Your IT Service Provider

Because of the massive amounts of data that many IT organizations are now being asked to routinely manage, there’s a major shift toward object-based storage systems under way. While object storage systems were initially adopted by cloud service providers (CSPs) to provide storage services, enterprise IT organizations are making use of object storage systems on-premises as well.

The challenge they will soon face is finding a way to manage multiple object storage environments spanning hybrid cloud computing deployments. To provide that capability, Leonovus today unveiled software-defined object storage system (SDOSS) software that includes the tools needed to also manage governance, risk management and compliance (GRC).

Leonovus CEO Michael Gaffney says rather than getting locked into a specific cloud platform, Leonovus invested millions of dollars to create a Web Integrated Services Environment (WISE) framework to tie all storage nodes into a common communications network in real time. Included in that framework is support for erasure coding technology that breaks data up into fragments that, from a GRC perspective, make it simpler to distribute and secure large amounts of data across a hybrid cloud computing environment, says Gaffney.

That approach, adds Gaffney, effectively makes it possible for IT organizations to avoid getting locked into any specific platform.

“Our goal is to be both hardware and software agnostic,” says Gaffney.

Trying to avoid getting locked into a specific platform is not a new idea for IT organizations. But what is changing is the sheer amount of data involved. Getting locked into a specific platform can now easily involve petabytes of data. Taking steps to avoid that issue today could very well be the key to avoiding what could be a much more prohibitively expensive problem tomorrow.
