What Business Leaders Need to Know About Virtualization

To expand the reach and scope of a scale-out storage architecture that can be defined by software, HP extended its storage offerings to include a 4TB license for small sites and a 50TB high-capacity license to support more granular, automated tiering of data and tighter integration with VMware and SAP environments.

According to Dale Degen, senior marketing manager for HP storage, IT organizations are looking for an approach to software-defined storage (SDS) that can easily scale up or down. Degen says the new Adaptive Optimization capabilities included in HP storage will allow storage administrators to automate the tiering of data below the sub-LUN level.

In addition to the standard 10TB license, HP is also making available 4 and 50TB licenses to extend the usage of HP storage in branch offices and larger data centers.

HP is also adding support for VMware vCenter Operations Manager via a new HP StoreFront Analytics Pack and a plug-in that integrates HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage and HP XP P9500 Storage with SAP NetWeaver Landscape Virtualization Management software.

Degen says that overall, HP is trying to demonstrate that its LeftHand Networks and 3Par storage operating systems offer more granular control over automation while being more extensible in terms of support for platforms, applications and additional types of storage mediums. For example, HP recently added support for Flash storage within the 3PAR lineup, which Degen says can be expanded to include support for other types of non-volatile memory that are currently under development.

As the management of storage continues to rapidly transform across the enterprise, HP is making the case for platforms based on storage operating systems that will continue to evolve over time, versus point products that need to be managed in isolation. The appeal of this approach will ultimately be determined by how strategically important any given IT organization views its investments in data storage, which are consuming an ever increasing share of the overall IT budget.
