Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2016
At the SAP TechEd Barcelona conference today, SAP moved to make it simpler to develop mobile and cloud applications using the SAP Fiori framework it created for developing HTML5 applications.
Senthil Krishnapillai, head of mobile security technologies for SAP, says by invoking SAP Fiori, cloud edition, and SAP Fiori mobile service frameworks, IT organizations will gain access to a platform where a much greater percentage of the workflow surrounding the development of an application is now automated. The end result, says Krishnapillai, is a substantial reduction in the amount of time it takes to develop those applications.
In addition, Krishnapillai says that once the applications are created, IT organizations will be able to automatically deploy them in an app store through which they can optimize distribution of the application.
Both offerings are tied to the SAP HANA Cloud Platform service, where SAP manages instances of its in-memory computing platform on behalf of its customers. The goal, says Krishnapillai, is to enable organizations to take a more platform-centric approach to building applications that is significantly faster. At present, most IT organizations continue to approach the development of applications as individual projects rather than relying on a reusable set of backend services that cut both development time and costs.
Initially, the SAP Fiori mobile service will support applications build for Google Android devices, with support for both Apple iOS and Windows to follow shortly.
The degree to which IT organizations will standardize on a HANA cloud service to build HTML5 applications naturally remains to be seen. But for those organizations that do commit to HANA in the cloud, the ability to roll out mobile and cloud applications faster should go a long way to reducing application development backlogs that are getting longer with each passing day, regardless of the approach.
