The idea that there should be some unified approach to managing content makes a lot of sense from a conceptual perspective. But even in the age of the cloud, it’s proven challenging for most organizations to implement an enterprise content management (ECM) system. To address that issue, Xerox has now unfurled a cloud-based ECM service aimed squarely at small-to-medium (SMB) organizations.

Wasim Khan, head of Xerox global workflow automation, says Xerox DocuShare Flex takes advantage of the Microsoft Azure cloud platform and REST application programming interfaces (APIs) that can be employed by any size organization or department.

Most SMBs today employ some form of a cloud service to store digital documents. But most of those services don’t include any workflow processes for managing that content. Khan says Xerox is now making its enterprise workflow expertise available in the form of a cloud service that is easily accessible.

“It’s designed to be applicable to as few as four users,” says Khan.

Naturally, Xerox views printers, workflow software and the cloud all being seamlessly linked together. But providers of output devices have been slow to connect the various dots in a way that the average SMB can readily employ. The degree to which Xerox rises to that challenge remains to be seen. But there is some comfort to be taken in the fact that the devices used to scan and print documents are now becoming part of larger cloud ecosystem that also encompasses ECM.
