Tech company Sporting Innovations plans to invest $20 million to renovate a historic Kansas City building and will add 120 jobs there over the next three years.

The company, which creates technology to enhance fans’ experience at sporting events, launched last year and has 50 workers in Kansas City now, according to Silicon Prairie News.

Its new headquarters at the Hanna Rubber building, 1517 Baltimore Ave., is expected to be renovated by June 2013. The company is affiliated with Major League Soccer franchise Sporting Kansas City, whose ownership group includes Cliff Illig and Neal Patterson, co-founders of Kansas City health care technology giant Cerner.

The new company has been building and testing a platform, called Fan360, and various smartphone applications. Among its potential technologies are to allow fans with smartphones to access various video feeds of the game to see multiple angles of the action. Another allows them to scan a QR code on stadium seatbacks access the team’s website or to order apparel online, reports The Kansas City Star.

Illig told the Star:

What we see in sports is similar to healthcare. You have stadiums with 30 different technologies that don’t talk to each other. This will enhance the fan experience and be a platform for innovation.
