2014 Big Data Outlook: Opportunities and Challenges

SAP has announced that its portfolio of business intelligence and analytics applications is running on the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud.

Christian Rodatus, senior vice president and general manager for SAP Analytics, says that, as of now, SAP analytics customers have the option of running SAP analytics on a HANA in-memory computing platform in a multi-tenant environment, a hosting environment managed by SAP or in their own private cloud.

The degree to which customers will mix and match those platforms remains to be seen. But the one thing that is for certain is that the line between transaction processing and analytics continues to blur.

Specifically, Rodatus says SAP sees much greater usage of embedded analytics within business processes. Whether that take place in real time or near real time, Rodatus says analytics will be more efficiently used to effect a business outcome in flight.

In addition to driving usage of analytics in real time, Rodatus expects end users to take advantage of SAP Lumira data visualization tools to start constructing their own analytics applications that will make use of SAP HANA services running in the cloud.

All in all, SAP sees the delivery of analytics via the cloud as an opportunity to significantly broaden the impact analytics makes on almost every business process imaginable. The challenge, of course, is figuring out how to make that move to the cloud in the first place.
