NaviSite Adds DRaaS for VMware to Cloud Service

Ten Tips to Help Businesses Prepare for Severe Weather

One of the first places most organizations think to embrace cloud computing is backup and recovery. After all, storing massive amounts of data on premise that is rarely accessed doesn’t often make a lot of financial sense. The challenge is finding a way to effectively transfer that data into the cloud.

To address that issue, NaviSite, a VMware cloud service provider that is a unit of Time-Warner, unfurled a disaster recovery-as-a-service (DRaaS) offering called NaviCloud Director that is based on the replication software from Zerto.

Chris Patterson, senior director of product management for NaviSite, says that rather than relying on cumbersome backup and recovery processes, NaviCloud Director enables IT organizations to replicate data between a VMware virtual machine running on premise and another instance of VMware running on the NaviSite cloud. In the event that virtual machine running on premise becomes unavailable, an IT organization can simply point their affected applications at the virtual machine running on the NaviSite cloud to maintain availability of their applications.

The Zerto replication software, says Patterson, gives IT organizations control over everything from the replication intervals to where the specific nodes in the NaviSite cloud are located.

While IT organizations may not need that level of availability for every application, it’s becoming apparent that as far as mission-critical applications are concerned, we’ve reached the point where downtime is not only avoidable, it is simply inexcusable.

With replication between on premise systems and the cloud becoming more pervasive and affordable, the ability to switch application environments in a matter of minutes should finally minimize the impact of any IT failure regardless of cause.
