Lead Tech Engineers Are Required to Wear Many Hats

    Companies that provide technology-based services to internal or external clients rely on their IT team for more than the usual enterprise IT organization. Often, these IT teams keep company systems going, but also must have superb customer service, up-to-the-moment knowledge of new technologies, and keen tech engineering skills. And to keep the team on track, the lead technology engineer is usually the one person out in front, working with clients to provide the necessary services and solutions to keep their businesses growing.

    When an enterprise organization is looking for a lead tech engineer, confusion may arise about which skill sets such a candidate must possess. After all, it can be difficult to find someone who is both tech-savvy and customer friendly. But you want to ensure the lead tech engineer has those skills and more.

    According to the PDF, the lead technology engineer helps align solutions with the client’s business needs and then creates a plan to implement that solution within their budget. Other responsibilities are:

    “… Providing and developing expertise in a variety of client industry concepts, practices, and procedures; demonstrating and reinforcing the value of our customers to ensure client retention; identifying and establishing strategic long-term technology goals, policies and procedures for clients based on business objectives and budget requirements; and designing and overseeing implementation of technology solutions.”

    Qualifications for a person who would fill such a position might include a degree in computer science, finance or management. For a lead technology engineer, previous experience managing IT projects and teams would also be a good fit. The candidate should have extensive experience in the technologies your company will be providing plus any that you may be considering adding to your services or products list.

    Appropriate certifications for the role may depend on the types of services offered, but could include MCSA or MCITP. Other skills and certified achievements could include project management PMP completion and/or ITIL certification.

    If the position will include travel to customer sites, you should also verify that the candidate has a valid driver’s license and dependable transportation. And be sure to list any specific technologies your company uses as part of the list of requirements.
