As more mission-critical applications start showing up on virtual servers, managing the performance of virtual machines is going to be a much bigger issue than it is today.

Most of the applications sitting on top of virtual machines today are not mission-critical. So even though virtual machine performance is still a concern, most IT organizations are not too concerned about the performance of applications that are not mission-critical.

But once mission-critical applications start getting routinely deployed on virtual servers, Ilya Mirman, VMTurbo vice president of marketing, says that equation is going to change. IT organizations will want to know exactly what is happening with every virtual machine in real time so that information can be fed back to tools that automate the distribution of application workloads across the production server environment.

To facilitate that process, VMTurbo has released a namesake virtualization management suite that provides operational metrics about virtual machine environments in real time.

Mirman says part of the reason we’re seeing enterprise organizations stall when it comes to deploying mission-critical applications on virtual machines is that they lack the tools to proactively manage dynamic virtual machines deployments that by definition are more complex to manage than a dedicated physical server.

The good news, says Mirman, is that the tools needed to automate the management of virtual machines in production environments are getting more sophisticated. But unless the tools are coupled with real-time analytics that show IT organizations what’s happening in their environments, Mirman says, all the automation in the world isn’t going to make much of a difference.
