Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Requirements for Personal Computers and Servers

Complying with environmental edicts starts with the purchasing process. These sample guidelines will help you evaluate client hardware systems against EPA and other green tech standards.

The City and County of San Francisco Committee on Information Technology (COIT) uses
this policy to ensure that all information technology purchases meet specific
environmental requirements.

This policy requires that all personal computers purchased by the city (including
central processing units, monitors and laptops) conform to, at a minimum, the
Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) Silver standard. Servers and
desktop laser printers must also meet similar energy efficiency requirements, including
those for Climate Savers Certification and Energy Star qualification.
