Datadog Expands into Application Performance Management

In the age of DevOps, the line between monitoring IT infrastructures and the applications that run on them naturally gets blurry. In recognition of that new reality, Datadog today launched an application performance management service designed to complement its existing IT infrastructure monitoring service.

Alex Rosemblat, vice president of marketing for Datadog, says the Datadog Application Performance Management (APM) service, delivered via the cloud, provides a holistic approach to IT that makes it simpler and faster to correlate application and IT infrastructure data to identify the root cause of any performance issue. Previously, Datadog had created alliances with several providers of APM as a cloud service.

“We’ll continue to have partnerships with companies such as New Relic,” says Rosemblat.

Rosemblat says many Datadog customers made it clear they wanted the responsibility for aggregating application and IT infrastructure performance data to be provided by Datadog using a single pane of glass.

Thanks to the rise of DevOps, more organizations are taking an application-centric approach to managing IT. In some cases, developers and IT operations teams work hand in glove. In other cases, the developer that wrote the code in the first place is now responsible for managing every aspect of that application even after it’s deployed in production. Regardless of the approach employed, the mean time between when an issue is discovered and ultimately fixed narrows considerably using a DevOps model.

Of course, the majority of IT organizations have yet to muster the internal political capital required to fully embrace DevOps. But as DevOps concepts continue to permeate through the organization, the need to tightly couple application and IT infrastructure monitoring becomes just that much more important.
