Our partners at Info~Tech Research Group surveyed and talked to more than 200 IT executives about the techniques they are using in four key areas to control cost:

Staffing and Salaries
Project Portfolio Management
Vendor and Outsourcer Management
Discretionary Spending

They found that the general business imperative to reduce cost — and not the current economic downturn — is the main driver for current cost-containment efforts.

Some other key findings you’ll find in this slideshow:

While 3 in 10 organizations have used layoffs to reduce costs, changing the use of contractors & consultants is the most popular.
Reprioritizing or cancelling projects are popular choices. Fewer IT departments introduce initiatives that specifically drive cost savings.
Changing discretionary spending & travel policies contributes to discretionary spending reductions, but few organizations focus here.
