While interest in all things Hadoop is running high, a lot of organizations simply don’t have the skills and resources needed to stand up their own Hadoop cluster. Instead, many are opting to set up Hadoop clusters in the cloud. The challenge is that regardless of where that Hadoop cluster resides, the internal IT organization is still responsible for managing it.
To facilitate that process, Compuware has released APM solution for Hadoop on Amazon Elastic MapReduce, an application performance management framework optimized to make it easier to manage Hadoop applications running on Amazon Web Service (AWS).
Michael Masterson, director of strategic business development for Compuware, says the solution makes use the of Compuware’s PurePath technology that Compuware gained via its acquisition of dynaTrace in 2011. The end result is an APM framework that captures all the timing and code level context for every Hadoop event running on AWS.
That capability is especially critical in terms of being able to actually manage service level agreements (SLAs) in a granular way on an AWS cloud platform that is not widely regarded for the visibility and control it provides IT organizations.
As part of a larger trend that is witnessing the increased availability of enterprise-class management tools on AWS, the APM solution for Hadoop on Amazon Elastic MapReduce provides a method for managing applications that are increasingly running directly on top of a Hadoop cluster.
Masterson says Compuware has plans to apply this capability to other cloud computing environments as part of a broader effort to extend the reach of its management tools, which is a strategic focus for the company as it begins to divest itself of businesses that are no longer deemed to be strategic.
In the meantime, from an IT perspective, this latest offering from Compuware addresses two significant issues simultaneously; namely, how to not only manage Hadoop applications, but also how to do so when they are not running within the traditional four walls of the enterprise.
