Conventional wisdom holds that one of the easiest ways to come into compliance is by upgrading your enterprise software to a version that has the best control practices baked into the software.

But a recent survey conducted by PwC of 88 organizations that recently either deployed new SAP software or upgraded an existing deployment finds that the majority of them wound up automating controls after the SAP software was installed. The majority (54 percent) reported using governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) technologies and/or other compliance tools to put those controls into place.

The good news is that the majority were definitely better off from a compliance perspective after the SAP software was installed, but in most cases SAP software alone wasn’t enough to meet compliance goals, especially in terms of automating the management of SAP controls.
