Given the fact that no data is created equal, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that IT has a great need to manage different classes of data, especially in this era of compliance. The problem, of course, is that when it comes to archiving or backing up data, the options have been relatively limited.

At the VMworld 2013 conference today, Quantum announced a new approach to managing backup data and active archived data that combines an object file storage system developed by Quantum with the Simpana data management software developed by CommVault.

According to Mark Pastor, archive product marketing manager for Quantum, the new Lattus-D offering leverages disk-based systems to give organizations a way to retrieve certain classes of archived data that on occasion still need to be retrieved quickly.

The Lattus storage operating system that is being used here was developed by Quantum to drive its family of disk-based backup and recovery solutions. CommVault, meanwhile, provides applications that manage the backup, archive and disaster recovery process.

The two companies have worked together in the past, but Pastor says Lattus-D represents a way to simplify the acquisition of two classes of complementary data management technologies.

We live in an era when managing data has never been more complex. More flexible object-based storage systems are slowly replacing traditional file systems, especially in the cloud. Rather than trying to individually put all the pieces required to manage data together, Pastor says Quantum is making the case for acquiring a unified approach to backup and archiving that allows the customers to more easily decided what type of data needs to go where at any given moment in time.
