Veritas Expands Data Protection Ambitions

How to Use the Cloud to Become a High-Velocity Business

If IT organizations are going to all the trouble and expense associated with backing up data, Veritas Technologies is making a case for being able to leverage that effort in multiple ways.

With the launch of NetBackup 8.0 today, Veritas is adding support for integrated copy data management, predictive resiliency analytics, and visualization tools that provide graphical tools for identifying backups that have occurred, or soon will, in addition to highlighting data on primary storage systems that hasn’t been recently touched.

Scott Anderson, senior vice president and general manager for information protection solutions at Veritas, says NetBackup is at the core of a 360-degree approach to managing data that Veritas is trying to foster.

“We’re trying to help organizations eliminate risk and reduce costs,” says Anderson.

Each of these new capabilities will be delivered as optional extensions to NetBackup that will be licensed separately.

In addition to launching NetBackup 8.0, Veritas this week at the AWS re:invent 2016 conference rolled out updates to its InfoScale offerings for protecting data in the cloud. The latest updates make it simpler to move data into the cloud as well as cache that data to improve overall application performance.

The challenge that Veritas faces is that responsibility for functions such as copy data management doesn’t always reside with IT administrators tasked with data protection. Veritas, says Anderson, is trying to have a conversation about data management rooted in data protection with senior IT leaders.

It remains to be seen just how data protection will evolve in the months and years ahead. But the one thing that is for sure is that, however data protection manifests itself going forward, it will be more comprehensive than anything that has gone before.
