As Amazon continues to extend its dominance of the public cloud, interest in being able to create a replica of Amazon Web Services in a private cloud that runs on premise is naturally increasing.

Looking to make hybrid cloud computing seamless across a private cloud and AWS, Eucalyptus Systems today released version 3.3 of its namesake private cloud computing platform.

According to Andy Knosp, vice president of product for Eucalyptus, IT organizations are going to need to shift workloads between AWS and private clouds running on premise in a bi-directional manner. To facilitate that process, Eucalyptus is adding new features in its offering that replicate new services that have been recently added to AWS, including support for auto-scaling based on policies defined by the IT organization that leverage Amazon application programming interfaces.

Other new features include load balancing, a new CloudWatch capability for monitoring workloads, resource tagging that allows organizations to apply metadata constructs to managing a specific set of IT resources, expanded support for the instance types that can be found on AWS and a maintenance mode that allows IT administers to perform management tasks without having to take the private cloud offline.

Down the road, Knosp says that Eucalyptus will be looking to officially certify Eucalyptus compatibility with the Asgard open source cloud management tools for AWS that have been developed by Netflix, while at the same time increasing compatibility with OpenStack. For example, Knosp says that Eucalytpus is taking a close look at the Swift object storage system and Quantum networking technology that are being developed under the auspices of the OpenStack consortium.

Ultimately, IT organizations are going to be faced with the option of either looking for a public cloud platform that mimics their existing IT environments, or finding a way to allow their private cloud to evolve alongside a public cloud. Given the rate of innovation and sheer economies of scale at AWS, Eucalyptus is betting on the latter.
