5 Big Ways Big Data Is Changing the IT Network

The line between traditional data protection and everyday data management continues to get narrower with each passing day. Fresh off of raising another $61 million in funding, Rubrik today announced a data management platform that spans everything from archiving and compliance to analytics and data protection.

Rubrik CEO Bipul Sinha says the Rubrik Firefly platform takes the company for the first time beyond the realm of simple data protection to providing a full suite of data management capabilities across an extended enterprise. At the core of Rubrik Firefly is an indexing engine that Sinha says makes it possible for IT organizations to search for and then instantly retrieve any file regardless of whether it’s stored in the cloud or on premise.

Sinha notes that as organizations in general continue to think of data as being an asset that needs to be better exploited, indexing engines that make it much easier to find that data are going to become a crucial component of any enterprise-class approach to data management.

“Data management as it exists today is too cumbersome,” says Sinha. “We enable IT organizations to apply policies to orchestrate data anywhere.”

After largely being ignored for many years, data management appears finally poised to become a major priority for enterprise IT organizations. Rather than approaching data residing in various silos in isolation, IT organizations in the age of the cloud and Big Data clearly need a more holistic approach to managing data. There are, of course, multiple ways of achieving that goal. But in terms of being able to use data as a competitive weapon, the IT organization that masters data management across the entire enterprise first is going to have a significant advantage in the race to become a truly digital business.
