Monitoring a situation is one thing; fixing it is quite another.
AppDynamics today announced that it is extending its application monitoring tools to include run book automation capabilities that IT organizations can leverage to automatically remediate an application performance issue using advanced analytics.
According to AppDynamics CEO Jyoti Bansal, the goal has always been to unify the monitoring and management of applications and infrastructure in a way that addresses “DevOps” issues once and for all. Instead of there being a wall between developers and IT operations teams, Bansal says to create a new mindset where IT management software leverages application programming interfaces (APIs) exposed in the underlying IT infrastructure to automatically remediate application performance issues.
Bansal says accomplishing that goal requires new players in the IT management space that are not carrying any legacy IT management architecture into what is really a new modern era of application management.
AppDynamics 3.7 includes a library of run books that support thread dump collection, JVMs, IIS, and server restarts, the ability to execute scripts from Chef or Puppet IT automation tools, run existing run books or custom scripts and integration with third-party service management consoles.
While much has been made of the “DevOps” crisis, IT organizations on the whole are looking for ways to reduce the friction that often exists between developers and IT operations teams. Tools such as AppDynamics are undoubtedly giving developers more control over the underlying IT infrastructure environment. Allowing that to happen within acceptable pre-defined parameters should lead to a lot less contention between developers and IT operations teams that want nothing more than to be able to get out of each other’s way.
