As IT organizations become more sophisticated about their overall approach to managing IT, application lifecycle management (ALM) has become a recognized discipline.

In a worldwide survey of 2,442 IT executives conducted by Serena Software, a provider of ALM software, the majority of the respondents cited improved processes as the number one reason to invest in ALM and improved visibility as the primary benefit.

For more years than anyone in IT cares to admit, ALM was pretty much an ad hoc affair. But as the complexity of IT management grows, it looks like more IT organizations are turning to some form of structured ALM to bring order to the chaos.
