How the Data Center Will Grow Up in Three Years
With more workloads than ever running in public and private cloud computing environments, capacity management has become a major challenge for many IT organizations. In recognition of that simple fact, BMC Software today released version 10 of its TrueSight Capacity Optimization software that adds a reservation capability that helps prevent organizations from overprovisioning IT infrastructure resources.
Giuseppe Nardiello, senior manager for product management at BMC, says thanks to the rise of virtualization, there are now more application workloads running on different times on each physical server. BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization now includes an analytics capability that enables IT organizations to better optimize usage of limited physical infrastructure resources, says Nardiello.
The new release also adds support for the OpenStack cloud management framework for the first time, which Nardiello says is starting to make inroads in cloud computing deployments.
In an ideal world, it would naturally be a whole lot better to sort out capacity planning issues beforehand. But because IT organizations often don’t have much control over what virtual machines are being spun up when, capacity optimization has become a continuous process.
Of course, the degree to which IT organizations are trying to maximize physical infrastructure will vary widely between organizations. But with the latest generation of Intel Xeon-class servers, it’s not uncommon to see hundreds of virtual machines running on the same server. Obviously, that creates a recipe for contention issues across a finite number of physical resources. Moreover, it’s a dynamic situation that the average IT administrator simply isn’t going to be able to fully optimize without some assistance from an analytics application.
