Recognizing that midmarket IT organizations are backing up more data than ever at a more frequent rate, Arcserve today announced it has revamped its line of data protection appliances.

Christophe Bertrand, vice president of product marketing for Arcserve, says the second generation of the Arcserve Unified Data Protection (UDP) Series appliances takes advantage of faster Intel processors, more memory and solid-state drives (SSDs) to increase the amount of raw source data that can be processed per appliance up to 240TB.

“Depending on the type of data, that’s a 2.5 times increase,” says Bertrand.

In general, Bertrand says midmarket IT organizations are not only trying to cope with more data, the rise of ransomware has forced IT organizations to rely more on an ability to recover data in a timely manner. Because of that issue, Bertrand says enterprise-class features that make it easier to test actual data recovery fidelity in a data protection offering priced to meet midmarket IT budget requirements is becoming more critical.

Other enterprise-class features Arcserve includes with UDP appliances include on-appliance virtual standby, instant failover and bare-metal recovery (BMR), high availability and multi-site WAN-optimized replication across a variety of public and private clouds, says Bertrand.

Just as significantly, Bertrand says that because UDP appliances are specifically designed to make use of appliances that, for example, de-duplicate data at its source, the entire data protection process is fundamentally more efficient.

Thanks to the rise of ransomware, data protection is clearly a top of mind issue for many IT organizations. The challenge now is figuring out which approaches to data protection make the most sense based not only on where application workloads are deployed, but just as importantly the amount of data that needs to be backed up locally and into the cloud.
