Mobility: How It’s Changing Our Lives

Small to midsize businesses (SMBs) often don’t have the resources, skills or budget to properly manage employees’ mobility needs, much less a successful Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. As a result, employees use their own smartphones and tablets for business processes and in doing so, they often put the company’s data in a precarious position.

One particular company, Vox Mobile, has found a way to provide enterprises with total mobility solutions and now hopes to bring that successful solution to the SMB market. Vox was recognized in the Forrester BYOD Wave Report as an industry leader in mobile management and has been recently featured in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant on mobility management.

In an email interview with Gerald Hetrick, COO for Vox Mobile, I asked what most SMBs don’t realize about BYOD in the workplace. Hetrick’s response isn’t surprising:

There will be plenty of opinion on this one but personally I think there are two common misconceptions about BYOD in a small business setting.  First, BYOD is not always a cost-saving program.  Implemented poorly, BYOD programs can end up costing more.  Second, BYOD doesn’t mean “no company support required.”  End-users will still have typical procurement and technical support needs and any assumption that because the device is employee owned an organization rids them of that burden, is often wrong about that.

Hetrick believes that SMBs need help implementing and managing BYOD programs and that Vox can be an affordable service for smaller businesses:

Vox Mobile offers a Managed Mobility solution that includes a SaaS tool to implement, manage, and report on a BYOD program from policy acceptance to device acquisition. While also offering a suite of supporting services that provides carrier transaction handling, technical support and EMM platform management. …In most cases, for less than the cost of text-messaging plans, Vox Mobile can implement a managed mobility solution for organizations of all sizes.

Even for SMBs that do provide mobile devices to their employees, Vox can still assist in managing those devices because that’s where the company got its start: managing mobility services for enterprises.

But providing employees with access to mobile solutions isn’t just for the big enterprises. Hetrick believes that mobility is one of the most important aspects of all business today and it can be integral to a company’s success:

A well designed, implemented, and managed mobility program should allow mobility to be a horizontal enabler to an established mission and business strategy, as well as an accelerator for future growth goals.
