Virtual First Server Procurement Policy

This sample policy encourages IT departments that are already employing virtualization to expand those efforts, and those that have not yet started to plan out a transition to a virtualized data infrastructure.

The City and County of San Francisco Committee on Information Technology (COIT) created this policy to further their mission to use IT resources more efficiently and increase the city’s IT capabilities. Virtualization represents an opportunity to reduce the data center footprint, increase energy savings, and improve capabilities for provisioning, monitoring and disaster recovery.

The policy encourages city departments to develop a virtualization strategy when submitting requests for new or replacement servers if one is not already in place. Departments that already employ server virtualization are encouraged to expand those efforts.
