Top Five Ways to Keep Your Data Safe
When it comes to backup and recovery, not many IT departments have a firm handle of the amount of data that needs to be backed up. The end result is that the scheduling of various backup processes has to be continually reevaluated.
To address that particular issue, Veeam Software today announced that Veeam Availability Suite v9, due out later this year, will include an Unlimited Scale-out Backup Repository that dynamically adjusts as the amount of storage available for backup increases. Doug Hazelman, vice president of product strategy and chief evangelist for Veeam Software, says that Veeam Availability Suite v9 treats all the available storage resources as one pool of storage. As a result, there is no longer a need to manage each storage device in isolation from every other storage device, says Hazelman.
That approach, notes Hazelman, also frees up much of the space that often goes unused on those storage devices, which can result in as much as an additional 30 percent in backup storage capacity.
Overall performance also improves, adds Hazelman, because full and incremental backup files can be assigned to separate storage devices. In turn, recovery point objectives (RPOs) can be more easily achieved, because the IT organization gains more control over where files and images can be placed on certain classes of storage devices, says Hazelman.
In effect, Hazelman says Veeam has crafted a software-defined approach to backup and recovery that gives IT organizations more granular control over the overall backup and recovery process. The degree to which IT organizations will want to invoke that capability today is up to them, but it would come in handy when everything they think they know about their current data protection needs changes.
