There’s an old saying that reminds people that you can’t manage what you can’t see.
The trouble with managing IT is that there are a lot of ways to view the various components that make up the IT infrastructure. But each of those components tends to be managed in isolation, resulting in a disjointed understanding of what is happening within the enterprise.
One company trying to provide a more holistic approach to managing the enterprise is ORSYP, which earlier this week announced the availability of UniViewer, a portal that seeks to combine workload automation, performance management and capacity management under a common framework
Besides saving money by eliminating the need for diverse sets of tools, ORSYP chief marketing officer Mark Fletcher says that UniViewer reflects a new approach to managing IT that is beginning to take hold in the enterprise.
Rather than managing individual components, IT organizations want to be able to manage everything from the application down to the IT infrastructure as a single entity. That means they need new IT management tools that enable the ability to see and manage the entire application stack and related IT infrastructure.
ORSYP, which earlier this year partnered with Hewlett-Packard, sees an opportunity to drive the transformation of how IT is managed in the future using a peer-to-peer management architecture that eliminates the need for agents and single points of control.
Instead, Fletcher argues that IT organizations need an inherently distributed approach to managing IT that reflects the new realities of virtual and physical server environments.
There is no doubt that substantial change is coming to how IT is both organized and managed. Much of that change will meet with some resistance. But the economics of enterprise IT are changing, and with those changes comes the necessity of rethinking the way we will manage IT.
