2014 Big Data Outlook: Opportunities and Challenges
Managing Oracle database environments has never been particularly simple, but with the rise of cloud computing and Big Data, it’s certainly become a lot more challenging.
Oracle today moved to address this challenge with release four of Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c. Dan Koloski, senior director of systems and applications management at Oracle, says the latest release includes the ability to provision databases at the push of a button, while at the same time adding predictive analytics that make it simpler to identify potential database performance and availability issues.
In addition, the new release adds an enhanced console for managing who gets access to Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c and tighter integration with Oracle Fusion 12c middleware software.
In general, Koloski says Oracle is trying to make it easier to manage databases in a world where the management of IT is starting to converge. By exposing application programming interfaces (API), Oracle makes it possible to share database management information with not only third-party IT management tools, but also to allow Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c to consume that information.
In fact, Koloski notes that the automated provisioning capabilities provided in Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Release 4 are made possible by an API-enabled service catalog that Oracle has created.
Koloski says the latest additions to Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c represent a change in increasing the efficiency of the database administrators (DBAs), which is required in a world where IT organizations are being asked to be more agile than ever.
The world of the DBA is clearly transforming. Many of the routine tasks that DBAs perform today are being rolled up inside larger DevOps processes. That doesn’t necessarily mean the role of the DBA is being eliminated, but rather redefined in an era when the number of databases and the applications that touch them is proliferating at a rate that is more rapid than ever.
