Embarcadero Metadata Server Takes on Compliance Issues

It’s not all that uncommon to find a technology that was developed to address one use case to suddenly be applied to another. Such is the case with the launch this week of Embarcadero Metadata Governance, a framework from Embarcadero Technologies that applies a set of technologies originally created to help developers build applications to data governance issues.

According to Henry Olson, director of product management for Embarcadero, many of the same issues that developers have tracking application components also apply to keeping track of what data is related to different projects. The Embarcadero Metadata Governance metadata server technology provides an information lifecycle management system around of central repository regardless of where the data actually resides in the enterprise, says Olson.

As a technology, metadata servers have not seen widespread adoption. Olson says the reason for this is that the metadata servers really need to be applied to specific application use cases that make it easier for IT organizations to derive value from the effort required to set one up.

To help simplify that effort, Embarcadero this week also announced that it has released an upgrade to its ER/Studio XE3 data modeling tools, which includes improved impact analysis tools along with support for custom data types.

Olson says the biggest compliance issue that most organizations face today is that only a fraction of the data they have is actually being actively managed. The Embarcadero Metadata Governance makes it not only easier to discover where that data resides, but also map its relationship to other data strewn across the enterprise.

Data management and governance on the best of days is hard. With the amount of data growing exponentially, any help IT organizations can get to simplify and reduce the management costs of that data will certainly be welcome.
