Now that emails are generally considered to be legal documents, organizations are being required to retain them for years on end. But because no one knows when or if those records may be need to be accessed, more organizations prefer to archive those emails using the least expensive storage medium possible.

Arcserve today announced it has expanded its data protection portfolio to fill that need by acquiring FastArchiver. Arcserve CEO Mike Crest says FastArchiver is unique because it provides an ability to easily search emails via a console after they’ve been archived.

To now be offered as Arcserve UDP Archiving, Crest says the acquisition of FastArchiver fills a hole in the company’s portfolio in a way that allows Arcserve to address a pressing customer demand.

“This is a pure technology buy,” says Crest.

Crest says Arcserve is agnostic when it comes to storage mediums that organizations may want to employ to archive emails. In general, the issue with retrieving archived data, of course, is not the amount of time required to load data using, for example, a tape storage device, but rather the time it takes to find where the email was stored in the first place.

Naturally, nobody looking for archived email is likely to be in a patient mood, which means the faster IT organizations can retrieve those emails, the sooner the IT staff can get back to doing something that should add a lot more value to the business.
