How to Launch a Successful API

In addition to formally joining the Industrial Internet Consortium, SAP this week announced that it is partnering with Jasper to create a platform for managing Internet of Things (IoT) applications and systems. The partnership was announced at the Mobile World Congress 2015 conference.

David Parker, global vice president of Big Data and IoT for SAP, says that under terms of the agreement, Jasper will port the Jasper Control Center platform, which is used to automate the lifecycle of IoT services, to the SAP HANA platform.

The ultimate goal, says Parker, is to be able to integrate data that flows into the Jasper platform with analytics applications running on SAP HANA in order to create a bi-directional IoT environment where data is collected, and predictive analytics is also used to optimize the IoT environment.

While IoT is still relatively in its infancy, Parker notes that investments in IoT are only going to create business value when all that data can actually be analyzed in real time. As an in-memory computing platform, SAP HANA provides not only the raw horsepower needed to analyze that data, but also a platform through which data generated by a wide variety of systems can be normalized and harmonized, says Parker.

Longer term, Parker says SAP sees the IoT as providing one of the foundational components of a network economy that is starting to emerge around application programming interfaces (APIs), analytics and in-memory computing. Rather than relying so much on traditional batch-oriented processing, a network economy will make use of real-time analytics to drive new classes of applications that process data in real time.

As part of that effort, Parker says SAP joined the IoT Consortium led by GE, IBM, Intel, Cisco and AT&T to help promote the adoption of open IoT interfaces.

Obviously, SAP is not the only vendor with similar IoT ambitions. But given the scale of SAP’s existing ERP footprint in the enterprise, Parker says that SAP has a big chance to be relevant in all things IoT.
