As IT continues to evolve, the need to distribute data is becoming more pressing than ever. Not only are there more applications looking to access the same data, they all want that access to be provided as instantaneously as possible.
A huge percentage of that data resides in Oracle databases, which is why IT organizations should take note today of the launch of release 2 of the GoldenGate 11g data integration software from Oracle. Acquired by Oracle in 2009, Brad Adelberg, Oracle vice president of development, says GoldenGate has been primarily used in high-availability scenarios involving multiple Oracle databases. But the new release of GoldenGate adds support for the ability to capture data from and deliver data to IBM DB2 on iSeries, in addition to enhanced support for MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, Teradata and IBM DB2 z/OS.
That’s significant because database administrators (DBAs) have been under pressure from developers to find ways to make data integration a lot simpler. In fact, in the age of agile application development, DBAs are increasingly being looked upon as a bottleneck in the data distribution process. GoldenGate gives DBAs a mechanism for distributing data in real time without having to give up control over how that data gets distributed.
Now that it matters less whether that data is originally stored in an Oracle database or even invoked by an Oracle application, the GoldenGate data integration software becomes more applicable across a broader number of use cases.
As businesses start to realize the true value of data, many of them have come to realize that value increases exponentially when it’s shared. The challenge has been finding ways to easily and quickly share data that all too often is locked up somewhere in one IT platform or another. The good news is we’re finally starting to see some significant progress towards achieving that goal from one of the most significant data management providers in all of IT.
