As more IT organizations get comfortable with cloud computing, many are turning their attention to performance issues in the cloud. Just like on-premise applications, poor performance of cloud-based applications can be detrimental to the business.
A new survey of 700 businesses in North America and Europe from Compuware, a provider of tools for monitoring cloud computing performance, finds that performance issues are already a major concern.

Approximately how much money does (or would) your organization lose due to performance problems with cloud-based applications each year?
The weighted average for North America respondents was $985,000. Almost one third (29 percent) of North American companies are losing $1.5 million or more per year, and 14 percent are losing $3 million or more.
Do you hesitate to use or slow your adoption to cloud computing because of your concerns about application performance?
Fifty-eight percent said yes. Performance issues are definitely a rising concern.
As cloud applications are delivered to end users over the Internet, our IT department’s ability to guarantee service levels is severely restricted.
Sixty-five percent agreed with this statement. Existing cloud computing infrastructure is shaky.
For cloud-based applications, I would expect SLAs based on end-user experience.
Ninety-four percent said yes. Simple availability metrics won’t cut the SLA mustard.
