Storage vs. Backup: What Your Business Needs to Know

When an hour of downtime for a small to midsize business (SMB) can cost between $8,220 and $25,600, it’s obvious that your business needs a backup and recovery plan that gets data and systems back online quickly. After all, what company can lose that much money in such a short amount of time and stay in business?

For the third year, ChannelPro’s SMB readership has chosen backup and recovery company, Carbonite, as its Best Cloud Backup and Disaster Recovery Vendor. The company and its partners support over 1.5 million businesses and individuals by ensuring their data is safe and available even after a disaster. It provides cloud and hybrid cloud solutions for business continuity with an easy-to-use system for protecting and storing critical business data.

According to a testimonial on the Carbonite website, when one user’s hard drive died, all of their data was restored within just a few days. Having the reassurance that all business data can be restored allows many SMB owners to feel more at ease about trusting their business information to this technology.

But another up-and-coming company may be challenging Carbonite for the spotlight. Datto has been providing backup and recovery and business continuity products to SMBs since 2007 and stands behind its motto of “our business is to keep your business running, no matter what.” It acquired Backupify last year to extend the protection it provides to its clients.

In an interview with TechRepublic, Austin McChord, CEO of Datto, explains why having a solution that provides recovery quickly was important to him and his company:

It’s pretty simple. Intelligent business continuity is about not just getting your data back — it’s about keeping your business running. Backup products are widely available, but just having your data isn’t enough. You need to keep your business running, even in the face of severe disaster or complete site loss. With true business continuity, your systems are online in as fast as six seconds after a disaster. Customers never even notice there was a problem.

The big claim to fame for Datto, though, is that its SIRIS server solution can provide recovery in 6 seconds. The device has a virtual version that backs up the entire system once, and then only backs up what has changed for subsequent backups. That means a current full backup is ready at a moment’s notice via the Datto Cloud even if the hardware fails for any reason. That’s some service.  One that may make many SMBs reconsider their backup solutions.
