As the challenges associated with managing data inside and out of the cloud become increasingly complex, many organizations are starting to rethink the way they go about managing data across multi-cloud environments. As a provider of a data management platform capable of being deployed both in the cloud and on premises, Veritas Technologies has been making a case for a platform-centric approach to information management.
Today, Veritas revealed it is bolstering that argument via the signing of a partnership with Microsoft under which Veritas will host an Enterprise Vault.cloud management and governance service on the Microsoft Azure cloud. That move comes on the heels of a technology alliance with Amazon Web Services (AWS) under which Veritas is making Veritas 360 Data Management software available on the AWS cloud.
While the partnership with Microsoft is more strategic, in that Veritas is using the Microsoft cloud to deliver a policy-based service focused on enabling customers to protect and retain data, Alex Sakaguchi, director of solutions marketing for Veritas, says the company is committed to extending the reach of its software across as many relevant clouds as possible.
In fact, Sakaguchi says that the fact that Veritas already has a strong presence on premise winds up being an advantage as those organizations move into the cloud. As part of the Microsoft alliance, Veritas also announced that Veritas NetBackup 8.0 now supports the tiering of data storage into the Microsoft Azure cloud from an on-premise IT environment.
In the immediate future, Sakaguchi says, Veritas is focused on helping IT organizations transition to public clouds. But as cloud computing evolves, Sakaguchi says it’s apparent there will be a greater need to centrally manage data across multiple clouds.
“A lot of organizations will wind up in multi-cloud environments by happenstance,” says Sakaguchi.
Regardless of how they get there, the need to be able to manage data across multiple types of clouds is now all but inevitable. The only thing that will vary by IT organization is how they go about arriving at that destination.
