Rather than simply changing the location where a particular piece of technology is deployed and moving it into someone else’s data center, many organizations are looking for something that actually behaves more like a turnkey service.
With that issue in mind, IBM today announced that it plans to make available 20 different cloud services this year that range from customer analytics as a service to mobile as a service.
Collectively part of a suite of services known as IBM Cloud Business Solutions, Sanjay Rishi, managing partner for cloud consulting services for IBM Global Business Services, says the goal is to give customers a more turnkey approach to cloud computing that more easily scales.
Available as subscription services that run on the IBM SoftLayer cloud platform, Rishi says IBM is responding to customer need for more IT agility with the offerings. Not only do customers need the ability to scale up and down quickly when it comes to invoking cloud resources, they also need to reduce the amount of time it takes to first set them up, says Rishi.
Of course, seeing how these services are managed by IBM Global Services, the existence of these types of services will ultimately have a profound impact on IBM. Instead of contracting IBM technology services personnel to set up and configure IT applications and equipment, the setting up of the applications is now baked into the cloud service.
With more focus these days being put on the outcome that IT enables, it’s clear that the way IT is being consumed is significantly shifting. Many organizations have come to realize that they simply don’t have the talent, time or resources required to build every application from scratch. In fact, as important as the cost of a cloud service is when it comes to IT services, the more compelling business metric facing IT service providers going forward is now the mean time to delivery in terms of being able to turn on the service.
