With Amazon Web Services becoming a much bigger fixture within the enterprise, IT organizations are trying to find ways to optimize the performance of applications that need to share data between a private cloud and AWS. For many, that means moving their applications to a hosting center that has a direct network connection to data centers run by AWS.

At the AWS Summits 2014 conference in New York this week, Datapipe extended the range of services it provides over an AWS Direct Connect private network link to include everything from backup and recovery to security and identity management.

Craig Sowell, senior vice president of global marketing at Datapipe, says that customers looking to improve the overall performance of their hybrid cloud computing applications that need to share data with applications running in an AWS environment must move them into a hosting center that can provide a direct network connection into an AWS data center. Without access to a private network, the alternative is to use the public Internet, which then introduces any number of latency issues that adversely affect network performance, says Sowell.

For organizations that are not in a position to build their own private network for one reason or another, managed services providers delivered via hosting centers such as Datapipe give an alternative approach to hybrid cloud computing that reduces the capital expenses associated with cloud computing.

It is unclear how many hybrid cloud computing environments will involve third-party hosting facilities. But when it comes to cloud computing, proximity to Internet peering exchanges can make all the difference in application performance. With that in mind, third-party hosting services that are one network hop away from those Internet exchanges become a better option for deploying a cloud computing environment.
