Cloud Security: Technologies You Need to Safely Use the Cloud

When it comes to cloud computing, arguably the primary challenge facing IT organizations is how to efficiently manage application images that now run in and out of the traditional enterprise.

To make that task simpler, at the VMworld 2014 conference, CliQr Technologies this week released an upgrade to its CloudCenter management platform, which makes it easier for IT organizations to transform and move images between a variety of platforms and cloud environments, including Amazon Web Services, VMware, OpenStack and Hewlett-Packard. In addition, CliQr announced that it has added an image import capability that allows organizations to capture existing application images at run time.

Dave Cope, executive vice president of corporate development and chief marketing officer for CliQr, says that as IT organizations get more comfortable with hybrid cloud computing, they are looking for management tools that are up to the challenge. While many vendors define hybrid cloud computing as instances of their virtual machine technology running into what amounts to two different data centers, Cope says hybrid cloud computing is all about managing a diverse world of virtual and physical servers spanning multiple public and private cloud computing platforms.

To that end, the latest release of CloudCenter adds support for Unified Compute Systems (UCS) from Cisco along with RESTful application programming interfaces (APIs) that can be used to integrate CloudCenter with a variety of existing third-party IT management tools.

If cloud computing is by definition hybrid, IT organizations are looking to minimize the number of consoles they need to manage it. Obviously, many vendors are trying to position their products as that one management platform to rule them all in the cloud. When all is said and done, however, hybrid cloud computing from the perspective of the internal IT organization may wind up being little more than a superset of the application image management challenges with which they have long been familiar.
