Multi-Cloud 101: 7 Things You Need to Know
A10 Networks today revealed it has acquired Appcito, a provider of an ADC platform based on a microservices architecture optimized for cloud computing environments.
Kamal Anand, CEO and Co-founder of Appcito, says the acquisition of Appcito puts A10 Networks in a better position to service the growing demand for ADC functionality in the cloud. With the rise of container applications employing microservices that are mainly deployed in the cloud, there will be more competition for IT infrastructure resources than ever. The Appcito ADC was designed from the ground up to address that, says Anand.
Over time, Anand says, the relationship between ADCs deployed on premise and in the cloud will become more federated. In the meantime, IT organizations will need ADCs from a single vendor that can be deployed on premise or, in the case of A10 Networks, in the cloud.
Basic load balancers are still heavily relied upon to prioritize access to IT infrastructure resources inside the data center. But as those resources move to the cloud, the number of application workloads contending for those resources increases. There may be more compute, storage and networking resources available than ever, but the applications that run on the cloud are trying to share resources with more types of application workloads than ever.
It’ll be interesting to watch how the ADC battle in the cloud plays out. Every vendor that ever built a load balancer has similar cloud ambitions. In fact, load balancers are one of the most widely used technologies in the cloud today. Now it’s just a matter of how long it will be before IT organizations see the value in employing a more sophisticated ADC approach to managing those cloud resources.
