    Veritas Adds Data Classification Engine

As organizations of all sizes are held more accountable for how they manage sensitive and personal data, many of them are just now coming to realize how little they know about what classes of data reside where inside their organization. Veritas Technologies today unveiled an Integrated Classification Engine that will be embedded across its portfolio of data management applications to address that issue.

Zachary Bosin, director of solution marketing for Veritas, says in its first incarnation, the Integrated Classification Engine will be embedded within the Veritas Data Insight 6.0 analytics application. Next month, Veritas is also promising to deliver an update to Veritas Enterprise Vault that will incorporate the Integrated Classification Engine.

Bosin says Integrated Classification Engine will come embedded with over 100 data classification patterns that IT organizations can stitch together to create a policy that can be implemented across all the personally identifiable information (PII) the organization possesses.

“Most customers are really surprised to discover how much PII data they have exposed,” says Bosin.

A second phase of a report issued today by Veritas also notes that many organizations are underestimating what it will take for them to achieve compliance with a General Data Protection Rule (GDPR) that the European Union is scheduled to implement by May of 2018.

Bosin says IT organizations should expect Veritas to pick up the cadence of the updates it provides. Integrated Classification Engine is a microservice application built using Docker containers. That approach is making it simpler for Veritas to embed new functionality into its application portfolio.

Obviously, data classification is only one piece of the data management and governance puzzle. But it’s an important piece, given the simple fact that an IT organization can’t really be expected to manage what it didn’t know existed in the first place.
