Nothing literally trips IT professionals up inside a data center more than managing cables. Keeping track of which cables are attached to which storage systems or servers can be a major challenge in an enterprise-class IT organization.

To simplify that process, Wave2Wave Solution today unveiled the ROME 250 Robotic Optical Switching platform that runs all the fiber cables in a data center through a 19-in chassis that keeps track of which cables are connected to which specific systems.

Wave2Wave Solution CEO David Wang says that goal is make connecting cables more dynamic.

“If you need to connect something to something else, the right cables will now just light up,” says Wang.

Wang says ROME 250 is a smaller version of a larger version of the ROME platform that the company unveiled last year. Primarily aimed at carriers and web-scale companies, the smaller version of the ROME 250 brings the platform within the reach of a large enterprise.

Making the right physical connections may not always be the most strategic issue an IT organization is going to face. But as a tactical issue that results in a lot of wasted time, it turns out physical connectivity issues in the data center can literally tie an IT organization up in knots.
