2017 and Beyond: How Digital Innovation Will Impact the World
As the line between device and application management continues to blur, IT organizations are looking for more holistic approaches to managing a diverse number of endpoints. To help achieve that goal, VMware today announced an alliance with Adaptiva that promises to make it simpler to distribute applications to endpoints running Windows 10 using the VMware AirWatch Unified Endpoint Management (EUM) framework.
Adaptiva has developed a peer-to-peer approach to distributing Windows applications that eliminates the need for IT organizations to set up servers to distribute them. Instead, Adaptiva OneSite makes it possible for endpoints to use the PC that is physically nearest to them to install a copy of that application.
Aditya Kunduri, product marketing manager for AirWatch UEM within the End-User Computing group at VMware, says that VMware’s usage of Adaptiva’s technology will be mainly focused on Windows 10, which is managed in much the same way smartphones are.
”IT organizations can now locally cache an application on the nearest available endpoint,” says Kunduri. “You can then manage that from our Unified Endpoint Management consoles.”
The opportunity IT organizations now have, adds Kunduri, is to start unifying the management of all their endpoints under a common framework.
VMware is making the case that the emergence of digital workspaces in which end users routinely move files and documents between different classes of endpoints will ultimately force this management issue. A new VMware State of the Digital Workspace report released today finds that not only do mobile applications increase end-user productivity, they also enable organizations to tap into new streams of revenue.
Thanks mainly to adoption of Windows 10, the way PCs are managed across an enterprise is getting simpler. But PCs running Windows are now just one of many types of endpoints the average IT organization needs to support. Faced with that new reality, IT organizations need to make a strategic decision concerning how they plan to manage all those endpoints in the most cost-effective way possible.
