    Splunk Partners with Syncsort to Access Mainframe Data

    With more than 70 percent of all the data in the enterprise still residing in mainframes, it’s obvious that the mainframe is a target-rich environment for applying analytics. The challenge is that that the mainframe is also a potentially expensive place to apply those analytics.

    Looking to give IT organizations another option to analyze mainframe data, Splunk has partnered with Syncsort, a provider of high-performance extract, transform and load (ETL) and data integration software.

    Sanjay Mehta, vice president of product marketing, says Splunk customers will primarily use Syncsort technology to better correlate data currently residing in the mainframe with data that resides in other systems across the enterprise.

    For example, Mehta envisions customers using Syncsort ETL software to access mainframe log data such as Systems Management Facilities (SMF) records.

    The sad truth of the matter is that the majority of that type of log data has never really been analyzed because of the time and cost associated with doing it. By running Splunk for Linux, for example, organizations now have a chance to not only compare that data with other sources, but maybe for the first time really understand what’s happening in their mainframe environments at the most granular of levels.
