Developing Tech: What’s Next?

While there is clearly a huge amount of interest in all things relating to the Internet of Things, the management of thousands of interconnected devices is going to give even the largest of IT organizations cause for pause.

To address that challenge, Apigee this week unveiled Apigee Link, a set of REST APIs that organizations can embed into any device connected to the Internet.

Apigee Vice President Brian Mulloy says that the basic idea is to enable organizations to not only manage and secure IoT devices more easily, but also put a framework in place through which applications running on those devices can be deployed and updated.

Apigee Link is a commercially supported version of open source Zetta software based on Node.js that is connected back to the Apigee API management platform. It currently supports Apple iOS devices with support for the Google Android operating system coming soon, says Mulloy.

Many of the same concepts that have been pioneered in the development of the “API economy” are just as applicable to IoT environments. The challenge now, of course, isn’t so much figuring out how to apply REST APIs to IoT devices, but rather figuring out how to manage them once they get there.
