Why Enterprise Software Must Evolve In the Age of Apps

Following the recent acquisition of Syclo, customers of SAP have been waiting for the integration of mobile asset management technology into the SAP mobile computing portfolio.

SAP Mobile Platform 3.0 marks the arrival of that integration. This release unifies the mobile computing software that SAP gained via the acquisition of Sybase with the software SAP added when it acquired Syclo.

Jim Jaquet, senior director mobile marketing for SAP, says that SAP Mobile Platform 3.0 unifies Sybase and Syclo under one install that can be collectively managed via a unified user interface written in HTML5.

In addition, SAP announced that with the release of SAP Mobile Platform 3.0, the company is replacing its proprietary container with the Apache Cordova open source container, which has gained momentum among mobile app developers.

Support for Cordova, says Jaquet, extends SAP’s embrace of open source software and data formats that already includes support for the Open Data Protocol (OData), which Jaquet says is now SAP’s lingua franca for access backend services.

Jaquet says that at the moment, 290 pre-built mobile applications are available in the SAP app store. A full 60 percent of those applications, says Jaquet, were created by third-party developers.

Ultimately, Jaquet says the thing that distinguishes SAP Mobile 3.0 most is how simple it is to use it to build robust mobile computing applications for the enterprise. While the proof of that statement may be in the proverbial pudding, it seems that given the pace at which organizations are being asked to develop mobile computing applications, the speed at which those applications can be developed and actually used is of the essence.
