Red Hat has enlisted the aid of 3scale to provide an API management platform within the JBoss Middleware platform.
3scale CEO Steve Willmott says that as usage of APIs has become broader, the time to start integrating API management at the middleware and operating system level has arrived. While the relationship between Red Hat and 3scale is not exclusive, Willmott says that Red Hat is one of the first major providers of software infrastructure to partner with 3scale because there is a natural affinity between open APIs and open source.
In the last two years, REST APIs have emerged as the new de facto standard for not only integrating software, but also hardware. It may even be conceivable to unify the management of both under a common REST-based framework.
Willmott says 3scale already supported Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and as part of this alliance will also add support for JBoss xPaaS Services for OpenShift, which is the Red Hat platform-as-a-service (PaaS) environment.
Of course, REST APIs are not the only type of APIs that IT organizations need to contend with. In the near future, there will be all kinds of new server-based and real-time APIs that need to be managed alongside existing investments in Web services. As REST and other APIs become adopted, enterprise IT will surely become more flexible.
