New Relic Gives Business Users Insight into Web Applications

Five Ways to Scale Agile for the Enterprise

As more businesses become dependent on the Web to interact with customers, many of them have begun to realize that they don’t have as much visibility into business Web applications as they need.

To address that issue, New Relic today unveiled a bevy of new offerings at its FutureStack 2014 conference that are aimed at making application performance management (APM) data more accessible to the entire business. In addition, it announced that it has acquired Ducksboard, a provider of real-time dashboards for tracking business metrics from a broad set of application sources.

 Jim Gochee, senior vice president of product for New Relic, says Ducksboard is able to visualize and monitor software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications and other enterprise applications and is a critical extension of how New Relic is making application performance data more accessible. As part of that effort, New Relic also announced that it intends to provide a new Data Apps capability that will allow users to leverage the data that New Relic collects to create their own custom applications.

New Relic Insights Cohort Feature

While APM is usually the province of IT operations teams, Gochee says it’s clear that business users want more real-time visibility into what is occurring within their Web application environments. To that end, New Relic announced the general availability of New Relic Insights, an analytics tool that allows business users to more easily visualize and segment customer behavior.

Based on an analytics engine that New Relic has been developing for the past year, Gochee says New Relic Insights was developed as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) application that leverages core APM technology that New Relic developed to create an analytics platform through which developers and business users can have a common view of the events affecting the business as they actually occur.

For many companies, Web applications have become critical to just about every facet of their business. Instead of having access to all that information limited to handful of developers, Gochee says New Relic Insights is designed to turn everyone in the business into a “data nerd.” That’s critical, says Gochee, because in the digital age, all the information that business users need is actually available. As a SaaS application, Gochee says New Relic Insights can process trillions of queries to give those users access to information in real time.


In addition to formally launching New Relic Insights, the company announced that it plans to make a synthetic application testing service available as part of its existing portfolio of APM tools. It is also launching New Relic Browser, a stand-alone tool that provides code-level visibility into JavaScript applications. The company also announced that it added a new crash reporting capability to New Relic Mobile, which helps identify why mobile applications may be crashing on a particular device.

With more businesses than ever becoming digital entities, it’s clear the significance of a Web application goes well beyond what it means for IT. For all intents and purposes, many of those Web applications are now the business.
