LenovoEMC, a joint venture created by EMC and Lenovo earlier this year that now markets Iomega backup and recovery systems, is delivering its first product update today.
While Iomega devices are targeted towards small-to-medium businesses (SMB environments), the latest software updates to the Iomega product portfolio bring some decidedly enterprise-class features, including support for virtual machine software that allows organizations to run small applications, such as print server software, directly on top of an Iomega system.
According to Bill Hansen, global products manager for LenovoEMC, the ability to run applications directly on an Iomega network-attached storage system (NAS) gives organizations another way to maximize the use of physical space in their IT environments.
Other features being delivered with LenovoEMC LifeLine 4.0 include support for snapshots, SSD cache pools, iSCSI security and Active Directory hybrid authentication.
Hansen says IT organizations have the option to turn on any or none of these features, all of which can be delivered via an Iomega network-attached storage (NAS) system that can now be configured with 4TB drives.
While most SMB organizations have relatively simple IT requirements, there are an increasingly large number of SMB companies that, while having few employees, have complicated IT requirements. As IT sophistication continues to evolve, there is no real correlation between the size of a company and its actual IT requirements; a fact that is only going to become more apparent as the amount of data that has to managed by organizations of all sizes continues to spiral upwards.
